Black pickup

The World According to Garp

The Black pickup is Oren Rath’s vehicle during the abduction of Hope Standish, and a crucial object in the search that follows. First identified as the truck in which Rath takes Hope, it is misdescribed as turquoise in the information reaching authorities; the correction to black redirects the pursuit. When the helicopter finds it, the pickup has been abandoned, Hope is alive, and Rath is dead inside its cab.

Identification and the Conflicting Descriptions

Raspberry tells Arden Bensenhaver that Oren Rath has taken Hope and used the black truck, but cannot say where the vehicle went. Bensenhaver therefore orders the deputy to find out how long ago Rath left and to disable the turquoise truck, apparently acting on the wrong description. The exchange establishes the pickup as both a means of escape and an immediate problem for the search: if the authorities pursue the wrong vehicle, they may lose time while Hope remains missing.

Bensenhaver then sends the pilot a corrected message identifying Rath as the abductor and his vehicle as a black pickup, not a turquoise one. That correction connects the search to a state trooper’s earlier report of a man alone in a black pickup driving erratically near the relevant roads. The trooper had not followed up because he believed attention should instead be focused on a turquoise vehicle. The story supplies the crucial difference between the report and the reality: Hope had been in the truck with Rath, lying with her head in his lap. Bensenhaver does not know that when the report reaches him; he fears instead that the sighting means Rath has already harmed her.

Flight and Aerial Search

The black pickup’s last reported location helps define the search area. Bensenhaver directs the deputy toward the helicopter and tells him that they are looking for a black pickup last seen on the bypass where it intersects the county-road system near Sweet Wells. The corrected color and the earlier sighting thus turn a mistaken trail into a specific lead.

When the helicopter catches up with the truck, it hovers above it while Bensenhaver calls through a megaphone. From above, he sees feet protruding from the open cab door. Because they do not move, he assumes Mrs. Standish is dead; neither he nor the deputy considers that Rath might be the dead person. Bensenhaver tells the deputy that they may be able to frighten Rath if he is still in the truck, revealing how little they yet understand about what has happened there.

Discovery at the Truck

Hope emerges beside the pickup, moving away from the feet and seeking shelter near the cab as the helicopter descends. Her appearance reverses Bensenhaver’s expectation that he will find her dead: he recognizes that she is the woman, tells the pilot to back off, and treats her gently. She says she is all right, and Bensenhaver takes her with them rather than leaving her beside the vehicle.

The open cab reveals the outcome the search party had not anticipated. A driver whose car is stuck nearby reacts with alarm, and the pilot looks on; Bensenhaver moves both men away from the truck and orders the pilot to radio their position because an ambulance or other assistance will be needed. The deputy identifies Rath as the person inside. The pickup, initially a clue to Hope’s whereabouts and then the object beneath the helicopter, has become the setting for the confirmation of Rath’s death and Hope’s rescue.

Narrative Function

The pickup’s changing description gives a concrete form to the search’s delay: a black vehicle is reported, but the trooper’s attention has been directed toward turquoise. Correcting that error allows the authorities to locate the truck, yet their aerial view still misleads them about which person is alive. The scene turns on successive revisions of what the vehicle contains and signifies: first a route of abduction, then a possible sign that Hope has been killed, and finally the site where she is found alive and Rath is discovered dead.
